Teaching Reading

Reading is kind of representing what the writers say in their writing. Teaching is a work of teachers to give instruction to the pupil (Hornby 1995: 1225). the relationship of teaching and reading is really close. There is a process of stimulus and response in teaching between teachers and students in the sense that the students try to receive the instruction given by teachers. So, there is unique relationship between teachers and students in trying to get new experience.

In planning teaching reading there are two possible major positives. First, the teachers may accept the support and direction of some publised scheme. If this is done there must be room for some variation in the order of the usage of the materials to suit individual needs and the provision of various stages for those children who need it further, the teacher must legislate for transfer of learning by ensuring that when new skills are learned the child must use them in more realistic setting.

Second, as there appears to be perfect order in which reading skill should be mastered it would seem reasonable to suggest the mastery of skills in response to the demands of all reading and writing activities, arising from all other work in school. Here the teacher will be taking opportunities to extend skills as the child fines a need to use them. As this more realistic transfer of learning is not a great a problem as in the case of the use of structured materials.

Teaching reading needs to be interrelated with our daily experiences. Reading does not only know the words or read aloud but also reading with certain purposes.

According to Soegeng (1993:154), some characteristics or reading text that needs to be considered in teaching reading are:

a. Reability

Reading is the level of difficulties in structure and vocabulary which are found in reading text. The level of difficulties should be equal with the rates of students’ ability.

b. Siutability of Context

Beside, reading text has to be interesting and challenge the students, the content should be suitable with willingness situation and condition of reader’s life.

c. Exploitability

A good reading text has to be used to develop reading skill. One of the requirements is it hasn’t been known by the students. So they will find something new.
