A text which is used for specific purpose is called Functional text. There many kinds of functional text , such as: Notice, Procedure, Announcement, Advertisement, Brochure/Pamphlet, Memo. This is kind of material which taught by Junior High School and Senior High School Student.
My previous writing talks about a thesis which entitles teaching functional text to improve student ability in grammar, and I’ve got more THESIS in this Site that can be downloaded freely.
but now, i don't want to talk about Thesis, let’s back to what I want to share, still in teaching functional text theme. Here if you are a teacher, or an English department student, you must be learning how to teach some materials. Of course, you have to master it and the class. When you are teaching, good teacher are flexible and respond creatively to what happens in the classroom, but they also need to have thought ahead, have a destination they want their students to reach, and know how they are going to get there. Here, by using functional text, it is expected that student can reach the goal stating as follows
Students are able to:
1. Identify different types of short functional text.
2. Determining the content of the overview of short functional text.
3. Find factual information from a variety of short functional text
4. Discover implicit information from a variety of short functional text.
5. Determine the meaning of words based on context.
Indicators
1. Able to identify various types of Functional Short Text.
2. Able to find an overview of the contents of Functional Short Text.
3. Can find factual information from the Short Functional Text.
4. Can determine the implied information from short functional text.
5. Able to identify the meaning of words based on the context of a short functional text.
Teaching activity
Activity I
a. Teacher gives short explanation about functional text
b. Teacher gives some explanation about the kind of functional text
c. Teacher gives sample of announcement
d. Ask the students to find the information in the text
e. Teacher gives some questions related to the text as guidance.
Activity 2
a. Teacher give an example of invitation card
b. Teacher explains the information in the card
c. Ask the students to identify what, where, who, and how related to the event
d. Teacher explain the function of invitation card
e. Students write a story using simple future tense
Activity 3
1) Teacher gives a sample of short message
2) Student find the difficult words and get the meaning to add the vocabulary skill
3) Students try to translate into Indonesian language to get the meaning more clearly.
4) Student identify the subject, verb and object in every sentence
5) Teacher explain present simple tense
Activity 4
1) Teacher gives the students another sample of memo
2) Teacher gives the explanation again about generic structure which contain in the text.
3) Teacher gives the explanation about language feature commonly use in the text.
